Happy Yorkshire Day 2021

For those who may have forgotten, the 1st August is always Yorkshire Day!

We thought we would celebrate this great day by sharing some interesting facts about our wonderful home and county. Thanks to our friends at the inews for supplying some things we thought you would find interesting:

What are the origins of Yorkshire day?

Yorkshire Day was first celebrated in 1975 by the Yorkshire Ridings Society, beginning as part of a protest movement against local government reforms that came into force in 1974

The date alludes to the Battle of Minden, and also the anniversary of the emancipation of slaves in the British Empire in 1834, for which a Yorkshire MP, William Wilberforce, campaigned.

How is it celebrated?

Typically Yorkshire Day involves eating a large amount of traditional Yorkshire food, but there are also some traditional customs which take place. One of these is the reading of the Yorkshire Declaration of Integrity, which is always recited in the city of York.

Did You Know?

In the 2012 London Olympics, athletes from Yorkshire finished with 7 gold medals, two silver and three bronzes, if it had been an independent country Yorkshire would have finished 12th in the medals table.

East Yorkshire inhabitants used to think that dabbing freckles with blood from a white hen would make them vanish – it really worked soon white hens were hard to find!

The Yorkshire Motor Car Company in 1897 was the first British firm to sell cars on the never-never plan.

In the Domesday Book of 1086, Leeds was described as a large farming village!
