East Yorkshire Buses area director Ben Gilligan has spoken out to reassure women they can flag down one of its buses if they feel vulnerable and in need of assistance. It follows an incident, previously reported by Beverley FM, when a 16-year-old girl was left stranded alone at night when a driver refused to let her board a bus at Beverley Bus Station. Mr Gilligan told Beverley FM: I have met Mr & Mrs Hockney and their daughter and apologised for this, which didn’t reflect our usual practice or policies in respect of vulnerable people. We are also liaising with Reclaim These Streets and are looking forward to their input in how we can improve our procedures, including raising awareness among drivers of women’s safety.” He continued: “Can I reassure everybody – women in particular – that we are there to take you home safely, and that you can – and you should – flag down a bus if you are in need.”

A £1.2m project to refurbish two pumping stations between Beverley and Driffield to reduce the risk of flooding during periods of heavy rainfall, has been completed successfully. The project is a partnership between East Riding Council, the Environment Agency and the Beverley and North Holderness Internal Drainage Board, which have been working on the scheme for a number of years.
