BEVERLEY MP Graham Stuart has announced he’s backing Grant Shapps in his bid to succeed Boris Johnson as Prime Minister and Conservative Party leader. Mr Shapps, the current Transport Secretary, is one of currently 11 Ministers and MPs to declare they are running for the top job, with still more possibly adding their names to the list.

Mr Stuart, who last week was appointed as Minister for Europe at the Foreign Office, said: “We need competence, brilliant management skills and someone who has the experience to get us through the formidable challenges ahead. Grant Shapps is the right candidate to lead the country at home and abroad and has my full support.” In his new role, Mr Stuart will be responsible for strengthening relationships between the UK and other European countries in a range of areas, including investment and security.

BEVERLEY Rugby Union Club has so far raised £130,000 towards its £600,000 target to redevelop its Beaver Park ground, including a new clubhouse and car park. Club chairman Brian Gilbert is due to give an update at tomorrow’s annual meeting of the club and expects it to take another two or three years to realise their dream.

He told Beverley FM: “The club wants to reignite the passion for the sport in the local community and, by raising standards in the facilities offered, attract new talent and new partnerships that will build a strong future for the club in the heart of Beverley.”
