MORE BEVERLEY volunteers are needed by the charity Hull & East Riding Guide Dogs. Among the roles they’re desperate to fill are Puppy Raisers, to help raise a future guide dog, Sighted Guides to help a visually-impaired person feel more integrated in the community by going out, and Fosterers willing to provide a welcoming and safe environment for dogs in training.

Also needed are volunteer drivers and fund-raisers and admin staff. Anyone able to help can email linda.conway@guidedogs.org.uk

HULL TRAINS is asking the public to help choose the name of the latest new train to join its fleet operating between Beverley, Hull and London King’s Cross. Of the 50 names originally suggested, a shortlist of five has been drawn up for the public vote. All have local connections.

They are: Jean Bishop (the Bee Lady), who raised more than £125,000 for charity before her death last year at the age of 99, Hull rock band The Housemartins,  Lillian Bilocca, campaigner for improved safety in the fishing industry as leader of the “Headscarf Revolutionaries”, London’s Calling, a play on words linking Hull Trains with the popular album by The Clash, and Chip Spice, an iconic local delicacy.  Vote here

MUMS, babies, family and friends are invited to a picnic at various locations across the East Riding to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week. They include one at Flemingate this Friday at 11am. The initiative is organised by East Riding Council’s children’s centres, supported by specialist nurses from the Humber NHS Teaching Foundation Trust, to help provide help and support to those who are breastfeeding.
