A BY-ELECTION is looking likely next month to fill the vacancy in the Beverley Rural Ward of East Riding Council following the death of Cllr Pauline Greenwood. Cllr Greenwood, who was the council’s vice-chair, topped the poll at the 2019 elections when Beverley Rural returned three Conservatives. However, the Liberal Democrats are expected to make a strong push after winning two recent by-elections in Bridlington and South Hunsley.

Provided at least two candidates put their names forward to contest the vacancy by the deadline of July 29, the election will take place on August 25.  Currently, the Conservatives hold 44 seats with the Lib-Dems on 12.

EAST RIDING Council is joining forces with the police and other community partners to run several street surgeries across the East Riding from Monday to mark the launch of the UK’s second official Anti-Social Behaviour Awareness Week. It will include a session on Monday between 9am and 12 noon, when a bus will be parked on St Nicholas Road in Beverley. Residents are being encouraged to come forward to speak to council officers and others on issues troubling them.

And finally, Longcroft Year 9 pupil Freya Vidal, who lives in Leconfield, today represents England for the first time in the UK Schools international athletics event in Belfast. She joined the squad after winning gold in last weekend’s 200m under-17s race at the English Schools’ Athletics Association championships in Manchester.
