Muslim Hikers visit Yorkshire Wolds

The ‘Muslim Hikers’ group, liaising with the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, walked part of the Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail on Saturday 14 September.

The trail, which runs from Hessle to Filey, encompasses picturesque landscapes, heritage sights and villages across the East and North Ridings.

120 walkers from the Muslim Hikers group walked 10.5 miles of the trail, from Huggate church, near Driffield, through to Wharram Percy in North Yorkshire. The day’s warm weather amply showcased the beauty of the Yorkshire Wolds.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Countryside Access Team organised the event in partnership with the Yorkshire Wolds Way national Trail Officer from the North York Moors National Park Authority (NYMNPA), and with the support of volunteers from North Yorkshire Council, NYMNPA, and The Ramblers.

The invitation for the Muslim Hikers to explore the Wolds was in support of our shared goals to empower and support communities and champion diversity in the outdoors.

Also supporting the event were venues and community groups from both Huggate and Thixendale. This included St Mary’s Church and the Parish Councils, whose generous hospitality provided tea & refreshments and opened up their venues for the visitors.

The Yorkshire Wolds national trail is a 79 mile walk from the Hessle Foreshore to the cliffs at Filey Brigg. It includes sights such as the Humber Bridge, Londesborough Park, and the deserted medieval village at Wharram Percy.

Councillor Nick Coultish, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism said “We’re delighted to welcome all communities to experience the beautiful natural landscapes that East Yorkshire has to offer. It’s lovely to see the Muslim Hikers group draw attention to the county’s walking opportunities and we encourage all communities to visit East Riding’s superb hiking trails.”

Haroon Mota, from Muslim Hikers “It was great to experience the beauty of East Yorkshire, and the warm hospitality of its residents. We encourage all communities to explore rural Britain, and we will continue to champion diversity in outdoors & fitness.“
