BEVERLEY Race Company reacted quickly to extreme heat warnings issued by the Met Office and cancelled tonight’s race meeting, due to take place on The Westwood. Six races had been scheduled to run from 6.20pm through to 8.50pm. In a statement the racecourse said the decision followed consultation with the British Horseracing Authority.

“We have abandoned racing for the safety of all concerned. It’s important that we look after everyone – two legged and four legged,” the statement said. The racecourse confirmed refunds would be given for all pre-booked tickets and said they looked forward to welcomIng everyone to the next scheduled meeting on the afternoon of Tuesday July 26.

Meanwhile, Beverley Minster has said the Minster will be kept open until 6pm today and tomorrow in response to the warnings of extreme heat. “If anyone needs a space to cool down, you are very welcome to come and sit or have a drink- anytime from 10am-6pm,” the Minster’s Facebook page announced.

ANOTHER Beverley business, Sullivans in Toll Gavel, has closed. Saturday was the last day for the popular fish and chip shop, which has been operated by the Sullivan family for the past 27 years. The rising cost of fish is thought to be a factor in the decision, which follows the recent closure of White Rabbit Chocolatiers in Dyer Lane.
