KR sign Salford prop for 2023
Hull KR have announced the capture of Salford Red Devils’ powerhouse prop, Sam Luckley on a two-year deal from 2023.
The 26-year-old will link up with the Robins following an impressive 2022 season, helping the Red Devils to a Super League semi-final berth.
A hard-hitting prop in attack and defence, the Scotland International adds further Super League experience to KR’s impressive pack for 2023.
Originally born in the Scottish town of Kirkcaldy, Luckley grew up south of the border in North Shields and rose through the ranks at Newcastle Thunder before earning a move to Salford.
Having taken the road less travelled into Super League, Luckley made 82 appearances for his hometown club, Newcastle Thunder before joining the Red Devils in 2021.
Since then, the relentless forward has gone on to make 26 Super League appearances and help Salford rise up the table in 2022. A lifelong Newcastle United fan, Luckley scored one of the season’s most memorable tries at his beloved St. James’ Park during the 2022 Magic Weekend.
Luckley was delighted to sign with the Robins for 2023, revealing an existing connection with the East Hull club: “I’m really excited to get started at Hull KR. I played there for a few games in KR’s Academy so I’m looking forward to coming back and playing in front of those fans.
“I’ve had a great two years at Salford. It was a sink or swim in my mind, I had to prove myself. I think I’ve played well at Salford over this past year. It’s been a whirlwind; I’m looking forward to the next two years and developing further under Willie Peters.
“I’ll bring my own way of playing to our pack, but I also like to learn off other players. It’ll be great to have a wealth of experience around me. The effort areas are important to me. Every time I go out there, I’ll be giving 100%. I can’t wait to get out there now.
“Willie was a big part of my decision. He sounded so passionate for what he wants to do with the club. Hull KR are doing great things at the moment and I wanted to be part of something that was building for the future. The ultimate goal at the Robins will be to make finals and win trophies.
Willie Peters was excited to secure Luckley’s signature for the next two years: “We are pleased to have Sam Luckley join the club for the next two years.
“Sam has a very good offload and finds his front when carrying the ball. He’s a hard worker in defence which is an area we value here at Hull KR. He’s had a great year at Salford and can’t wait for him to get started. We now have very good depth in the prop position which was an area we wanted to strengthen going into 2023.”
