Hull City 1-1 Blackpool
Hull City earned a point in their final home game of 2022 after playing out a 1-1 draw against Blackpool. Óscar Estupiñán’s second-half header cancelled out Sonny Carey’s opener as the visitors ended the game with 10-men after Jordan Thorniley’s dismissal.
Head Coach Liam Rosenior made two changes to his starting XI to the one that faced Sunderland last time out. Alfie Jones ad Ozan Tufan came into the side for Lewie Coyle and Tyler Smith, while there was a welcome return for Allahyar Sayyadmanesh since recovering from his long-term hamstring injury.
There were few chances in the opening 10 minutes of the game, with Ryan Longman seeing his powerful shot blocked by Marvin Ekpiteta. Good build-up play between Tufan and Jean Michaël Seri saw the latter pull the ball back for Jones, who saw his effort deflect wide.
More passing movements saw the Tigers cause panic in the Blackpool penalty area, but the Seasiders defended resolutely to deal with the threats. Jones then released Tufan down the right wing before the Turkish international crossed the ball for Longman. The winger in-turn cut inside onto his right foot, but his curling strike went narrowly wide.
Half-chances came and went for both teams before the visitors opened the scoring on the 28th minute. Blackpool won possession high up the pitch before Sonny Carey rifled his finish from range past the best efforts of Matt Ingram.
Three minutes later, the Tigers thought they had got an equaliser as Estupiñán met Ryan Woods’ free-kick with a headed effort, but the attempt was brilliantly pushed onto the bar by Daniel Grimshaw. The loose ball was eventually punched away by Grimshaw after an initial goalmouth scramble.
Cyrus Christie was next to take aim, but the fullback was off-target at the back post while Ingram acrobatically denied Ian Poveda in the other goal. In the latter stages of the first half, Garry Madine fired an attempt straight into the gloves of Ingram while Estupiñán headed over from Regan Slater’s cross.
