Beverley Building Society is supporting the East Yorkshire arm of Mission Christmas, the UK’s largest Christmas toy drive, with a collection box for donations now taking pride of place in its Saturday Market branch. A society spokesman told Beverley FM: “This year, the team have already received 8,077 applications for toys from individuals and organisations across the region, and we’re confident that, with your help, we can play our part in helping them meet those.”

Toys can be taken into the Beverley branch up until next Wednesday; alternatively cash donations can be handed in to be used to buy toys. The society will also give its charity of the month donations for November and December, totalling £500, to the appeal.

Oxfam’s Toll Gavel Beverley shop is appealing for volunteers to work in store next year. Volunteers are needed for a range of rolls, including sorting donations, window dressing and manning the tills. Shop manager Michele Conway told us: “Put simply, without volunteers we could not open. Volunteers really are the heart and soul of our shop.”

And finally, East Riding Council’s waste and recycling team has won a national award for its campaign to reduce nappy contamination in waste sent for recycling, which led to a halving of contamination rates. The initiative included free recycling packs being given to parents.
