East Yorkshire Council starts new affordable housing project in Beverley

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has started work to develop a small site of new affordable housing, on Burden Road in Beverley.

The Burden Road project will see the delivery of four new council houses, which will consist of two two-bed houses and two three-bed houses.  Planning approval was granted in February 2023 and local builder, Geo. Houlton & Sons, was appointed as the contractor in April 2024.

The council is committed to provide jobs and training to people within the local area, through using locally based contractors such as Geo. Houlton & Son.

This project forms part of the council’s strategic priority to acquire and build new council housing across the East Riding of Yorkshire and the homes have been designed to high standard to meet the housing needs of the local community.

Ensuring that the houses are energy efficient is a key part of the project, with each one including air-source heat pumps and roof-mounted solar panels. This pilot scheme will also use technology to allow the council to monitor and evaluate energy usage and cost savings for tenants.  This information will inform designs for future council houses.

Work started in April and the scheme has received funding from both the council’s housing revenue account resources and Homes England grant, the government body which supports the new supply of affordable housing.

The development is due to complete in early 2025, with new tenants to move in shortly after.  The council houses will be allocated through the council’s housing allocations policy.

Councillor Gary McMaster, portfolio holder for planning, housing and infrastructure said “It’s great to deliver new affordable housing in Beverley, as well as support local training and jobs. I’m delighted that this scheme will pioneer new energy efficiency measures and look forward to seeing these houses take shape.”
