Cup: Staveley MW 3-0 North Ferriby
North Ferriby exit the NCEL League cup with a 3-0 defeat at Staveley Miners Welfare. Chris Bolder made eight changes from the league win against Yorkshire Amateur. Levi Tarbotton, Robbie Start and Josh Whiteley were the only players retained.
The Villagers came close early on, Josh Whiteley flicked the ball impressively and found Josh Dennett. Dennett progressed with the ball and shot. His strike hit the outside of the post. The hosts started to push and were denied by a great point-blank save from Lewis Exall.
The hosts took the lead when a corner went all the way through and found an attacker at the back post who only had to poke the ball home. It would be two by the end of the half, the Villagers gave the ball away and were punished as Staveley captain Sam Kirk finished smartly from outside the area.
The hosts made it three when a strike hit the bar, the Villagers couldn’t clear, and Clarke Greaves was on hand to put the ball into the goal. The Villagers went in search of a way back into the game. Levi Tarbotton had a free header from a corner but couldn’t guide his strike goalwards.
Chris Bolder’s thoughts after the game, “before the game our aim was to get minutes into lads who haven’t been around for a while. In some respects we got what we wanted, in terms of the result it’s a disappointing evening. We’ve thrown together a team tonight. Iwan Heeley hasn’t kicked a ball for a year, and we’ve got ninety minutes out of him”.
