Clock Face Miners 60-4 Beverley

As the score suggests this was a hard day at the office! Always speaking in defence of his players, Sam French commented “A very disappointing day. We are busted at the moment and we are missing over 15 players, who ultimately are some of our key players in the squad, and that took its toll. We travelled with a very young side, to a very good Clock Face side, who did their bits well and took the game too quick to us, and we couldn’t handle it. We are in a big transition period at the moment, with player turnovers and today is a massive learning day for the players individually, and the experiences will bring us all on, as we head to the important final part of the season.”

The visitors were under pressure very early on in the proceedings as the home side elected to run the ball on the last tackle. Jimmy Jones crossed in the left corner after 5 minutes for an unconverted try.
The visitors did attempt to hit back as Joe Morley and Joe Dobson attempted to create. After a couple of repeat sets, it paid dividends. A move direct from a scrum saw Callum Bielby cross in the right-hand corner for an unconverted try to level things up at 4-4 after 11 minutes.

Unfortunately, Beverley lost possession close to their own line following the restart kick. The next set saw Shaun Costello cross to convert his own try. Luke Forber and Brandon Lewis then added further scores both improved by Costello to lead 22-4 at the break. In between times, Beverley’s man of the match Jack Howdle seemed to make the most headway going forward and full-back Jack Offen did well to field some difficult high balls on debut.

The second half was the really disappointing bit as the visitors shipped a further 38 points. Jim Jones, Luke Leydon, Luke Forber (2), Lewis Geraghty, Karl Hunt and Callum Topping all crossed for the home side with 5 of the tries converted. A number of the tries came from interceptions as Beverley threw speculative passes in frustration.

Beverley now have a fortnight’s rest when they travel to bottom club Dudley Hill which is a do-or-die fixture. Sam French expects to have a number of bodies back for that one.
