Burnley 1-1 Hull City

Hull City’s unbeaten start to the Championship season extended to four matches with a creditable point at Burnley.

Ozan Tufan’s expertly taken finish from Oscar Estupiñán’s superb flick on gave the Tigers a 25th-minute lead but Jay Rodriguez’s tap-in from Ian Maatsen’s low centre quickly restored parity.

Shota Arveladze named an unchanged squad from the victory over another recently relegated Premier League side in Norwich City for the Tigers’ first visit to Turf Moor since 2016.

Vincent Kompany’s Clarets enjoyed 77% possession over the 90 minutes and looked lively early doors, Rodriguez’s speculative 30-yard strike bouncing wide of Matt Ingram’s right-hand upright.

Their willingness to play out from the back almost cost them a goal as Charlie Taylor’s short back-pass put goalkeeper Arijaenet Muric under pressure and his clearance ricocheted wide off Estupiñán.

One defensive lapse was followed by another as Tobias Figueiredo’s slip gifted Rodriguez a shooting opportunity but with the angle acute, Ingram stood strong and blocked well with his chest.

Josh Brownhill’s wide free-kick brushed the top of the netting but it was the Tigers, menacing on the break, who took the lead on 25 minutes.

Figueiredo’s volleyed clearance was superbly headed on by Estupiñán into the path of Tufan, making an intelligent untracked run through the centre.

The Turkey international raced away and kept his composure to coolly slot past Muric, stroking the ball right-footed into the bottom corner.

But the lead only lasted nine minutes as Josh Cullen’s incisive pass released Maatsen down the left and his precise low cross was tapped in by Rodriguez from four yards.

Maatsen was the Lancastrians’ biggest threat, standing up a cross which Cullen headed wide at the far post in the dying embers of the opening period.
