Beverley Athletics Club: 18th October 2022

Beverley had reason to celebrate its’ success in this summer’s Champagne league, organized by City of Hull. 8 local clubs had taken part in the league that had been an enjoyable series of races held every other Tuesday night throughout the summer. Three separate competitions took place throughout the series – a Handicap competition based on each runner’s best 8 of 10 race results, a Yellow Jersey competition for those completing all 10 races, and a team competition for teams of 3 within the handicap competition.

Beverley AC prize winners were many. T-shirts for running all 10 races were awarded to Lucy Stamford, Andy Tate, Dean Field, Bruce Woodford, Simon Pick, Sam Allen, Paul Allen, Rob Sparkes, Chris Gibson, Andy Johnson, Cat Williamson, and Carol Cooke. In the Yellow Jersey competition, the following prizes were awarded – Rob Sparkes Yellow Jersey men’s 1st place; Lucy Stamford Yellow Jersey ladies 2nd place; Sam Allen Yellow Jersey ladies 3rd place; Dean Field Yellow Jersey V55 1st place; Frank Harrison Yellow Jersey V80 1st place; Lucy Stamford Yellow Jersey V45 1st place; Sam Allen Yellow Jersey V50 1st place; Paul Furness 4th overall in the handicap series; Sam Allen 5th overall in the handicap series. In the team competition, Cat Williamson and Pam Atkins were members of the winning team of 3 and Chris Gibson and Frank Harrison were members of the 3rd place team of 3.

With so many choices of events, there is something for everyone and this past month has seen Beverley athletes take on many challenges. October saw the first event of the East Yorkshire Cross Country League take place at Wetwang, where 68 Beverley runners donned their club vests and trail shoes to take on the challenge. The team comprised of new runners as well as the more experienced runner and finished in 2nd place. November’s event will be held at Welton.

October has been a marathon month for many club members! 8 Beverley runners took part in this year’s London marathon. Ian Boardley was the first runner home in 3:22:05 followed by Peter Watkinson – 4:08:30; Lucy Berriman – 4:12:21; Jackie Hardman – 4:15:17; Lucy Bishop – 4:35:05; Matthew Seymour – 4:51:09; Stella Evins – 5:31:16 and Laura MacLachlan – 8:00:38. Meanwhile, in the Loch Ness marathon, Jan Stott completed in 4:44:46 and Jo Rowland in 4:44:52 and York marathon saw Jody Horth finish in 3:29:31, Brad Freeman in 3:42:42, Patrick Marshall in 4:22:26, Bruce Woodford in 4:22:36 and Nicola Riley in 5:42:40. In Amsterdam, Valeriya Marshall her marathon in 3:39:23. Meanwhile, 26.2 miles wasn’t enough for Peter Watkinson who completed the Dick Turpin 6-hour race at York, completing 35 miles and finishing 3rd overall and 1st in the MV70 age group.
