Beverley Athletic Club – 29th July 2021

Beverley AC’s hugely popular race, the Specsavers Walkington 10k, and fun run took place on the evening of Friday 9th July and was deemed a huge success. Last year’s event having been cancelled, this year’s event took place on a lovely evening with a capacity field of 600 runners. Ensuring that the event was fully in line with current COVID guidelines, first off were the fun runners at 6:45 pm followed by the 10k runners at 7:30 pm. Gathering and socially distancing on the Walkington playing fields, participants then set off on the popular but challenging course in a staggered start. The long steady climb up to the crossroads on the Little Weighton road and turning left for the descent into Little Weighton before the left turn taking the undulating road back to Walkington, and the final loop of the playing field before crossing the finishing line. Participants have been extremely complimentary about the event and given some extremely positive feedback. Fun runners enjoyed their medals for completing whilst 10k runners received T-shirts. The first 3 females in the 10k were Venika Moverley, Niki Whitaker, and Naomi Drakeford and first 3 males were Jonathan Frost, Matthew Snow, and David McKinnon.

Over 100 took part In the Fun run, where Beverley AC Juniors had a great night with 14 taking part. Beverley girls took the first 3 positions, with Indie Proudlove 1st, Lois Pottage 2nd and Millie Berry 3rd, whilst Dallas Jopling took 1st place for the boys with Beverley AC members, George Rice taking 2nd and Alfie Ryan taking 3rd places. Weather conditions were perfect for running the popular but challenging course. Many thanks must go to our sponsor, Jeremy Beesley, Director of Specsavers Beverley for his continued support of the event and who led the 10k runners out on his bike. Thanks also are expressed to the marshals who cheered and supported runners also the course and to the people of Little Weighton and Walkington, many of whom were out cheering the runners along the course.

Lucas Meagor, Event Organiser, added: “It was great to be able to stage the event despite the extended Government restrictions. Despite these challenges, runners enjoyed a great evening, reflected by the generous and positive feedback that we received. Our thanks to the residents of Walkington and Little Weighton for their support and hospitality”.
