EAST RIDING College is preparing to welcome its new Principal next month following the retirement of current Principal Mike Welsh. As previously reported by Beverley FM, Mr Welsh leaves the college at the end of this month after more than four years in charge.

Taking over will be Danny Metters, formerly Vice-Principal at Riseholme College in Lincolnshire, which is part of Bishop Burton College.  He has a background in animal science and conservation and has been a member of the senior leadership team at Bishop Burton College for the last five years.

In the last four years East Riding College has seen significant increases in student and apprentice numbers as well as the construction of a brand new Institute of Technology at the College’s Flemingate campus.

SOCIAL CARE Reforms, announced by the Government last September, including an £86,000 limit on personal spending, are expected to place increased burdens on East Riding Council budgets, councillors have been told.

The council’s Interim Adult and Social Care Director Gill Vickers told the council’s Cabinet roughly £1.12m would be needed to implement the reforms. And councillors also heard the number of people the authority expects to deal with could double from 5,000 to 10,000 once the reformed system is launched in October 2023. Councils will have to pay for social care once the threshold is reached.

The Cabinet also heard at least 30 new staff members would be needed to get the reformed system ready before its launch; coupled with a warning that recruiting the numbers of staff needed could prove a problem because of a nationwide shortage.
