Wilko confirm Beverley store operation review

Consultations are taking place which could lead to redundancies taking place at Beverley’s Wilko store, based in Flemingate, although there is no threat to the store itself. This follows an earlier national announcement that a review of all stores was taking place following difficult trading results.

Some speculation has suggested 12 jobs could be at risk at the Beverley store, although this hasn’t been confirmed by Wilko. The company did issued a statement to Beverley FM, which said: “Wilko confirm that following independent reviews of its operating functions it entered into consultation with a number of its team members at store level nationwide including Beverley. The high street value retailer is introducing a new simplified retail team structure to ensure it is best placed to continue to thrive within an ever-changing retail landscape and to ensure it can operate successfully and competitively.

“Wilko is committed to the future growth of the business and reviewing how we stay relevant to our customers and become a better retailer every day than we were the day before.  We do this by making sure all retail operations are fit for the future in order to provide customers in Beverley with the best possible service.

“Despite the challenging retail landscape wilko has seen both positive customer numbers and sales growth this year.  This is not translating into positive results despite all the hard work to reduce costs, grow own-brand and digital sales and, continued investment in IT and infrastructure.  Following independent studies we identified a legacy of retail structures that created complexity to manage and aren’t simple, fair and transparent for our team members.  The simpler newly defined store structure will give teams greater variety within their roles and bring focus to career progression all of which will ultimately translate into a better customer experience.”

“We are in consultation with a number of team members from Beverley and, as a family run business, we care about them greatly and know this is a difficult time of change.  We are working with our recognised trade union the GMB, listening to team members and offering support at all levels.  We are in a long period of consultation, working closely to find new roles and offering help and support to those seeking new opportunities.

“These changes are vital to ensure that we are more efficient as a business and so can continue to serve our customers in Beverley for many years to come.”
