Westwood warden to enforce barbecue ban?
Beverley Pasture Masters are considering employing a part-time ranger to enforce by-laws, including a “no barbecues” rule on The Westwood. The recent warm weather has seen an increasing number of visitors to The Westwood but the town’s pasture masters, who look after the common land, are warning barbecues are not allowed because of the risk of fire, particularly in wooded areas.
Pasture Masters chairman Allan English has reminded people there are already signs on The Westwood warning about the no barbecues ruling but said increasing numbers of people had been ignoring them. He said: “If it gets really dry and someone starts a fire, especially in the wooded areas, there will be a problem.”
He also complained that some picnickers are failing to take their litter away, leaving bottles and cans which pose a risk to grazing cattle.
