Weekend Preview – 30th July 2021

It is the time of the year when all our local sports seasons start to combine as the rugby league and cricket season reach their peaks and the new football season is just beginning. We have added a new sports team to our local sporting group and will be following the fortunes of Hall Road Rangers based at Haworth Park. If you want your sports team or club involved with the station, just email studio@beverleyfm.com.

Hull FC have had the first of their two fixtures over the weekend. The Black and Whites lost to Leeds Rhinos 12-22 last night and you can read the full report if you click the link. Brett Hodgson’s men will face St Helens on Monday at the MKM Stadium. Hull Kingston Rovers were due to play Salford last night however that game was postponed. The Robins will hope to gain revenge over the league leaders Catalans Dragons when they meet on Monday evening at Craven Park. The two met last Saturday with Catalans winning 32-30 with a late penalty.

Beverley ARLFC are finally back this weekend. Report Nick Robinson has more: The Blue and Golds will return to action this Saturday after a 3-week lay-off. They travel to take on Myton Warriors (2.30 pm kick-off at Marist) in this stop-start Covid ravaged season. Once again Covid alerts have robbed Tony Spence of a number of his squad members. As a result, the scheduled ‘A’ team fixture also against Myton will now not take place. However, despite the absences, a surprisingly strong outfit should take the field albeit a much reshuffled one. Notably, Alex Calvert will start in the centre and Francis Coggle and Joe Morley will start in the halves. Alex Starling is to start in the second row with the bench seeing a number of recalls. Lee Stevens, Joe Rose, Ryan Watkin and Charlie Gay will all be standing by. Speaking Tony ahead of the clash, Spence commented ” This season is all about gaining the respect of the higher-ranked opposition that we have faced. To an extent, we have already achieved this. ”

Beverley Town CC will hope to continue their excellent form of previous weeks when hosting Sherriff Hutton Bridge on Saturday. Last weekend saw Town progress through to the final of the Hunters Cup. As for Driffield Town CC, they have lost their last three and hope to beat Castleford CC also on Saturday. These games are weather permitting.

The football season returns for two of our footballing sides. North Ferriby are travelling away to Shirebrook Town after a relatively successful pre-season. You can read the full preview if you click here. Hall Road Rangers compete in the same division as North Ferriby which is the North East Counties Football League (NCEL), Division One. After a mixed bag of results in pre-season against some sides from higher tiers, Rangers head into the first game at home to Worsbrough Bridge Athletic hoping to continue with some strong performances.

Hull City continue their preparations for the new season this evening with a trip to Sunderland. City faced their first friendlies last week with a defeat to Mansfield, 2-1 and beating Scunthorpe 1-0 both on the Saturday. Beverley Town will host Barton Town Reserves this week at Hutton Cranswick. Town lost last week, 3-2, in a close fixture with Bridlington Town a side which is three tiers higher in the footballing pyramid. Hull City Ladies were due to travel to Stoke City this weekend, instead, they are at Lincoln for another friendly. Adie Costello’s side lost 4-2 to Bradford in the previous friendly, they did however have 10 first team players absent.
