BEVERLEY grandmother Karen Simpkin’s brainwave of “rescuing” supermarket flowers that have reached their sell-by date, is raising valuable funds for two very worthy causes – Children With Cancer UK and Beverley’s Cherry Tree Centre. Karen, of Bielby Drive, upcycles the blooms into cheerful little arrangements that people can buy from her garden gate, charging only a couple of pounds a time.

A bespoke flower pot and a hand-made painted card will set you back just £3. Karen also hand dries petals from the flower heads to make beautiful natural confetti, which is being snapped up by local brides-to-be.
For the month of August all money raised by Karen’s “Flower Box” initiative will be going directly to help 22-month-old George, grandson of Karen’s cousin, who suffers from ATRT, a very rare and aggressive brain tumour. More details and to read more of Karen’s efforts search out The Garden Family on Facebook.
MOLESCROFT Parish Council recently presented an award to Molescroft Primary School to congratulate them on their Ofsted inspection, which resulted in the school being rated “outstanding”.
VOLUNTEERS at Beverley Minster plan to turn the spotlight on climate change and environmental issues by staging an Eco Fair at the church next month. A variety of activities, including stalls, talks and workshops are planned for the event on Saturday September 30, from 10am to 4pm.
