‘Unknown’ Elwell painting up for auction
A previously unknown painting by Beverley-born artist Fred Elwell is expected to make between £8,000 and 10,000 when it’s auctioned in Driffield next month. The painting, thought to be a portrait of the artist’s wife, Mary Dawson Elwell, features in Dee, Atkinson and Harrison’s fine art auction in their Exchange Street storerooms on Friday December 1st.
The auctioneers believe the painting was done in 1914 just before Fred and Mary were married and was subsequently exhibited at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in London. The auction will also feature two unframed oil paintings by Fred Elwell, done during the couple’s many travels to Europe.
