There’s been something of a coup within the ruling Conservative group on East Riding of Yorkshire Council, with a vote yesterday removing councillors Richard Burton and Mike Stathers, in favour of new leader Jonathan Owen and his deputy, John Holtby. Informed sources within the party said it was a result of tensions over a number of issues, in particular the terms of any devolution deal in partnership with Hull City Council to ensure it protects the East Riding’s independence. The formal change of leadership of the full council will not take place until a vote at the AGM on 13 May, after which the new leader can officially appoint their cabinet.
