25 full and part-time jobs have been created by the opening of a new sports and fashion store in Flemingate today. Sports Direct and USC have taken a large 10,000 sq ft unit, left vacant by Outfit after the collapse of the Arcadia Group. They’re making a long-term commitment to the town with a ten-year lease. The centre’s landlords told Beverley FM that this is great news for the town as a whole and builds on Flemingate’s strong performance in bouncing back from the pandemic. There is no news yet on the large anchor store vacated by Debenhams. Full story here.

As Beverley Races attracted thousands of visitors to the town for its annual Ladies’ Day yesterday, the Mayor, Councillor Linda Johnson, told Beverley FM that it’s a shame a boisterous minority can tarnish an otherwise excellent event. She added that she wants to encourage as many people as possible to visit and enjoy the market town, because it’s good for the local economy and generates a fantastic atmosphere. But she called on visitors to act responsibly and respectfully to people and property, including its magnificent flower displays. She congratulated the Racecourse for doing a fantastic job. There’s a second afternoon of racing today.

A local couple from Molescroft received a very special delivery in the post this week – a personal message of congratulations from Her Majesty The Queen – to mark their diamond wedding anniversary. John and Sheila Maxwell tied the knot 60 years ago. Sheila told Beverley FM they were delighted to receive the Royal message. The childhood sweethearts met at school when they were just 12 years old. Romance blossomed when they were at university and marriage followed in 1961.
