St Mary’s launches bid for extra bells
Bellringers at St Mary’s Church in Beverley are embarking on an ambitious project to add a further two bells to the current peal of 10.
The present bells, cast in 1900, are regarded as one of the finest peals of 10 bells in the country. The smallest bell weighs 300 kg and the largest 1700 kg.
The project aims to have two smaller bells cast to enable a lighter ring of bells taking less physical effort to ring and enabling easier teaching of new recruits.
The ringers also hope to have an outreach programme with local schools that will introduce young people to the art of change ringing whilst, at the same time, supporting elements of their curriculum subjects.
The total cost of the project is estimated at £60,000 of which the ringers have already raised about £40,000. They are appealing for local support to raise the remaining £20,000.
