THE HOPED-FOR return of the town’s annual fireworks display on The Westwood, which was still being talked about early last month, has been dashed with less than a month to go. Beverley Westwood Lions has announced it is cancelling this year’s display, due to what they describe as “insurmountable logistical problems”. It would have been the first display since pre-Covid in 2019.

Lions spokesman Duncan Jack told us: “Unless we are 100 per cent confident that all health and safety measures are in place, it was the only course of action we could take. It is a great shame for this year, but now is the time for next year to be looked at with a total review of the event. The club feel it is now beyond them and would look to other groups or individuals to step up to the plate and start preparing for next year if that is what people want

He continued: “There is a good pot of money in the club’s reserves to help things happen. Please get in touch and we can look at getting together to make it happen.” Mr Jack can be contacted via email at grocerjack@grocerjack.karoo.co.uk

AHEAD of World Mental Health Day on Monday, East Riding Council has announced that chief executive Caroline Lacey has signed the “Charter for Employers Positive about Mental Health” on behalf of the authority.

A spokesperson told Beverley FM: ‘As a registered employer, East Riding of Yorkshire Council is demonstrating that it is actively committed to creating a supportive and open culture, where colleagues feel able to talk about mental health confidently, as well as aiming to provide appropriate support for the mental wellbeing of all staff.”
