An uninsured driver who killed a motorcyclist during an attempt to escape queueing traffic on the A1035 between Routh and Tickton, has been given a suspended prison sentence. Costel Matei, 26, of Hull admitted causing death by careless driving when he appeared at Hull Crown Court.

The court heard Matei was on a gridlocked road near Tickton when he made a sudden turn into the path of RAF airman George Ellis, 27, of Aldbrough. Mr Ellis was knocked into the road and sustained serious head injuries. He died in hospital seven days later.

Matei was given a four-month jail term, suspended for 18 months, ordered to do 200 hours of community service and disqualified from driving for two years. The court heard that Matei had no valid car insurance and had racked up 17 penalty points on his driving licence the previous year.

East Riding Council has launched the Omicron Additional Restrictions Grant scheme to support local businesses. It comes after the Government announced that councils would be provided with additional funding to help businesses that have been severely impacted by the Omicron variant but cannot access the Omicron Hospitality and Leisure Grant.

Businesses that have suffered a severe loss of income during December due to the rise of the Omicron variant and are unable to access other forms of financial support can now apply for grants from £250 up to a potential £6,000.
