THE EAST Riding Festival of Words will be returning this October, with several best-selling authors in attendance. Organised by East Riding Libraries, with events throughout the county, including Beverley, the programme has been put together by librarians based on authors, poets and other creative writers who are popular with library users.

The programme starts on October 7 and highlights include a murder-mystery morning at Beverley Memorial Hall a week later (October 14) with internationally best-selling author, LJ Ross, best known for her DCI Ryan series of Northumbrian murder mysteries, among the guest speaker. Tickets are free.

Saturday, October 21 sees the final day of the festival, when Beverley Memorial Hall hosts the ‘Bestsellers Day’, featuring some big-name authors, including Great British Bake-Off winner and Strictly Come Dancing runner up, John Whaite, discussing his memoir, Dancing on Eggshells. Tickets cost £7. Full details of all the events here

EAST YORKSHIRE Foodbank holds its annual meeting in Beverley Minster Parish Hall on Wednesday September 27, at 7pm. Currently the foodbank is closed for the Bank Holiday weekend and reopens on Tuesday at 9.30am. Anyone facing real crisis should call the helpline on 01482 393939.

PLANS for Beverley’s Christmas decorations this year will continue to include a real Christmas Tree in Wednesday Market, members of the Town Council’s planning committee will be told at their meeting on September 5. But East Riding Council workers will remove it as soon as possible after New Year to avoid a repeat of this year’s problems, when the tree had to remain in place long after Christmas because of birds nesting in it.
