CONSERVATIVE councillors locally are urging the Government to sign off on a devolution deal that would see an elected Mayor in the East Riding. Council Leader Anne Handley has already met with the Minister for Levelling-Up, Dehenna Davison, and made it clear that the East Riding is demanding the best-possible Devolution deal.
She told Beverley FM: “This is a big opportunity for our region, and we will be taking residents with us on this journey every step of the way to make sure people know what it is all about. In short, it’s about getting more money and more powers to improve the lives of local people.”
And she continued: “We really need to get on with this as a region, as every day we wait, we are losing our residents money. That is something I cannot let happen as Leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council. Our residents deserve the best and that’s exactly what we will fight to deliver for them.”
Because the Conservatives no longer have an overall majority on East Riding Council it will have to seek support from other groups to achieve their aim but say they are confident they can work constructively with other groups to secure a Mayoral Deal for the East Riding.
