Rugby League: Rovers post season’s first win
Hull KR 23 – 4 Catalans Dragons (Thursday February 16)
Having lost their opening two Super League games following promotion from the Championship last season, Hull Kingston Rovers got their season under way by dominating what in truth was a very average game at the KCom Craven Park stadium. The visitors rarely troubled Rovers and the hosts cruised to their first win of the season.
Rovers went in with a 16-0 lead at half-time after a good try from Ryan Shaw and two short-range efforts from Masoe and Lunt and two goals by Ryan Shaw. It was more of the same in the second half with KR dominating and the Dragons offering very little and they fell 22-0 behind 10 minutes after the restart.
Danny McGuire’s clever pass sent new veteran signing Danny Tickle over for a try. He grounded the ball between the posts making Shaw’s conversion a formality.
David Mead did touch down for Catalans on 60 minutes but it was never going to be more than a consolation, with Chris Atkins’s drop goal in the final minute completed the scoring.
Overall, it was a good defensive display by a hard working team who will have been pleased with their first two points of the season.
