RUGBY LEAGUE: Beverley secure National League place
There was jubilation amongst members of Beverley’s Amateur Rugby League Football Club this week after hearing the news that their application to play in the sport’s National League next season had been ratified. The club described it as “a massive achievement after playing Hull and District Rugby just three seasons ago” while director of rugby Pat Howdle commented: “I’m feeling quite proud. Congratulations to the players, coaching staff, committee, sponsors and supporters. Now the hard work begins.”
The Blue & Golds completed a successful season in the Premier Division of the Yorkshire League in 2017, in which they reached the end-of-season play-off final and it had already been revealed they will be the Yorkshire Men’s League’s only entry in the first round draw of the Rugby League Challenge Cup. Ties will be contested on the weekend of the 27th and 28th January.
The National League pyramid has four divisions in total – Premier Division and Divisions 1, 2 and 3 and Beverley will enter division 3, which includes some famous names, including Oldham St Annes, Barrow Island, Gateshead Storm and Dewsbury Celtic. Pat Howdle told Beverley FM: “It will be a big commitment for the club but we know what we want and it’s what we’ve been working towards ever since I came back four seasons ago. We’ve had a good three or four years, finishing in the top four, and now we want to progress to the next level,” he said.
