Pressure mounts for school places
Demand for places at some Beverley schools far exceeds those available and concern is growing that the situation can only get worse in the wake of new housebuilding. Keldmarsh Primary is one of the most oversubscribed primaries in the county, receiving 51 first-choice applications for just 30 places in the current round of placements. Similarly Beverley Grammar could not accommodate all those seeking a place for the new school year in September, with 166 applications for 150 places.
The situation appears more critical in the south of the town, where 2,000 new homes are expected to be built under East Riding Council’s 15-year Local Plan. However, on the north side of the town Molescroft Primary and Beverley High School were also oversubscribed although Longcroft School is said to have spare capacity.
