North Ferriby 4-0 Selby Town

North Ferriby took a break from their NCEL Division one campaign to face league rivals Selby Town in the NCEL League Cup and came away with a superb 4-0 win. Both sides made numerous changes from their respective games over the weekend.

The Villagers alone made 7 changes from the 3-2 victory at Swallownest. Chris Bolder handed debuts to Oliver Kemp, signed from Scunthorpe United Academy and Elliot Williams, the brother of Hull City midfielder Randell.

In the opening exchanges of the game, both sides looked to get a foothold and gain possession of the ball and build up to an attack. It was the Villagers who had more possession throughout the first half, and this resulted in the first chance of the game. Good play from Rinalds Jurkstis on the right-hand side to keep the ball in play resulted in the winger finding Danny Emerton. Emerton crossed the ball into the box, but his cross was cleared out for a Ferriby throw.

Harvey Carew was a threat in the first half and caused Selby problems down the Ferriby left-hand side. His cross was aimed at Harry Fenton and the number 10 saw his shot go wide of Dylan Parkin’s goal. Ferriby enjoyed even more joy down the left-hand side and this time it was debutant Kemp who skimmed the Selby right back and put in a cross, but this cross was also well cleared by Selby. The Villagers did have the ball in the net, but the linesman’s flag went up as soon as Jurkstis met the pass from Joel Shortland.

Shortland was in the thick of the action again a few moments later as he shot from outside the area and watched as his shot went wide of the post. Danny Emerton also had a shot outside the area before the half was done but this shot was straight at Parkin. Despite enjoying most of the possession the Villagers were reminded of the threat posed by the Robins. Louis Kirk was dispossessed in the Ferriby half by Charlie Clamp. The Selby Midfielder saw Lewis Exall was off his line and shot from a good distance but shot wide.

Joel Shortland was again involved in another Ferriby attack. The tireless midfielder pressed the Selby defence and got hold of the ball by intercepting the defender. A few passes between Shortland and his teammates ended with him shooting but it was straight at Parkin. The visitors had the last attempt of the half and arguably the best chance of the half. Gracjan Klimczak was put through on an angle and his shot bounced off the post and came back across the goal but luckily for the Villagers they were able to see off the danger.

The second half was much more fruitful for the Villagers and it took only two minutes for them to take the lead. The impressive Rinalds Jurkstis went on a mini-run with the ball across the pitch. He lost possession with a heavy touch but won the ball back with an impressive tackle. He played the ball to debutant Kemp who passed to halftime substitute Danny Buttle. Buttle crossed the ball and it was met by Harvey Carew who’s effort went past Parkin and put the Villagers ahead.

Carew, who was now playing upfront after the half-time changes were involved again soon after. He was too quick for the Selby defence and played a good one-two with Danny Buttle to see himself through on goal with Parkin. The Selby goalkeeper made a point-blank save to deny Carew. From the resulting corner, the Villagers doubled their advantage. A short corner was played to Danny Buttle who passed the ball to Niall Tilsley who was waiting 25 yards out. The Ferriby skipper hit a rocket towards the goal and the shot was too powerful for Parkin to handle and the ball ended up in the net.

It would soon be 3-0 to the Villagers. Lewis Exall punted the ball upfield and the bounce of the ball cased both Selby centre backs problems. Danny Buttle capitalised on the error and found Harvey Carew in the area. Carew shaped to shoot but laid the ball off to Harry Fenton who made a run into the box. Fenton took a touch and slotted the ball int the opposite corner to make it 3-0.

The Villagers had a couple of half-chances from some well-delivered corners from Danny Buttle. Captain Niall Tilsley headed over first and was soon joined by Joel Shortland in heading over a few moments later. It would be 4-0 after 73 minutes as Joel Shortland grabbed a well-deserved goal. It was from another Danny Buttle corner. The winger sent in his corner and it was met by a stooping header from Shortland to really put the game out of reach.

The last fifteen minutes saw the Villagers expertly see the game out and avoid any real danger. This was a brilliant performance from the Villagers. It was great to see the young players play so well and any of them were deserved of man of the match.
