New exhibition at Beverley Treasure House

A make-believe Margate by Edith Farmiloe

A new exhibition looking at children’s lives in the late 19th and early 20th centuries has opened at the Beverley Treasure House. The touring exhibition, called “Edith Farmiloe : The Children of the Poor”, showcases the illustrations of author and artist Edith, who was a vicar’s wife in areas of London. Self-taught, some of the illustrations are humorous, some slightly sinister and show how challenging and precarious life could be for children from poor families.

The illustrations and books are on loan from Edith’s family whilst supporting objects, such as clothes, shoes and children’s toys are from the East Riding Museums Service social history collection. The exhibition runs until July 8th.
