New bells of St Mary’s are dedicated
Three newly-cast bells adding to those already in use at St Mary’s Church, Beverley, were dedicated at a service in the church on Sunday morning and will remain on view until work starts on winching them into place in the bell tower in June. The three bells, each weighing a quarter of a ton, were cast at the same foundry that cast the church’s existing ten bells more than a century ago.
They are presently on display inside the church, close to the font. Two of them will help make up a set of 12, rivalling those in Hull Minster, York Minster and Sheffield Cathedral. The third, a semi-tone bell, will allow different ringing patterns. The whole project has cost £60,000 and has been completed ahead of First World War commemorations later this year. On November 11, 100 years since the Armistice, bells will ring out in unison from churches across the country.
