POLICE say they are investigating reports that a woman had £2,000 stolen from her handbag while walking through Saturday Market in Beverley. She says she had withdrawn the money from the NatWest Bank minutes earlier.

In a statement a police spokesman said the incident happened between 11am and 11.15am on Thursday, adding: ”If you have any information that may assist with our inquiries, or noticed anybody acting suspiciously in the area around the time of the incident, I would ask you to contact us on our non-emergency number 101, quoting log 206 of 13 April.”  

THE GOVERNMENT’S Environment Department has confirmed an outbreak of bird flu near Leven, announcing a 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone. East Riding Council told us: “The risk to the general public’s health is very low but if you keep poultry, captive birds or pigs within this area we need to hear from you.”

The statement continued: “People within the 3km zone must keep poultry and captive birds housed until further notice. The lifting of the national restrictions do not apply to this area.”
