Minster full as tributes paid to Michael Guest

Beverley Minster was completely full on Friday for the funeral service for highly-respected local businessman Michael Guest, who died last month at the age of 82. Mr Guest, who founded Guest & Philips jewellers in 1966, was a former borough, county and town councillor who was made an MBE in 2002 and an honorary Freeman of Beverley in 2016.

People stood to pay their respects as the cortege made its way from the Guest & Philips shop in Saturday Market and by the time it arrived at the Minster, cushions were having to be provided to cover radiators because nearby pews were full. During the service, the Reverend Becky Lumley said Mr Guest’s death was a great loss, not just to his family but the whole town.”

Tributes were also paid by his son Philip, who now runs the business with sister Karen, and childhood friend and fellow Beverley businessman John Bird, who said his friend worked tirelessly for the local community. Over the years the Guest & Philips business had expanded to include branches in Cottingham and Pocklington. A retiring collection at the service was taken for the Daisy Appeal and the Beverley Minster Old Fund.
