Midweek Round-up – 9th June 2021

It has been a busy start to the week for in and out on our local sporting scene. Hull City have made their first permanent signing into the club for the new season, Hull FC have recalled a winger from their loan, while Hull KR have recalled one player and loaned out another.

Starting with Hull City announcing their first deal of the 2021/22 season. George Moncur has signed on a free transfer, having spent the past couple of seasons at Luton Town in the Championship. The 27-year-old started his career at West Ham, with a series of loan spells to gain experience. Since leaving the London club with only two cup appearances, he has amassed 217 league appearances across various clubs with 83 of those in the Championship. Positionally, McCann has said Moncur can perform anywhere across the front three, in addition to having the ability to take on the number 10 role. It will be the second time McCann has linked up with the attack-minded player, after a brief loan spell in 2017 at Peterborough. Moncur joins the club on a two-year contract with the option of a further year.

Hull FC have recalled Mitieli Vulikijapani from his loan spell at Bradford Bulls. The outside back has joined the 21-man squad for Thursday’s fixture with Castleford Tigers. Josh Griffin will miss the rest of the season with his ruptured Achilles injury from the semi-final defeat to St Helens last Saturday. With Griffin’s spot vacant at left centre, Vulikijapani will compete with Cameron Scott for a starting jersey.

Hull Kingston Rovers half-back Mikey Lewis has returned from a successful loan spell at York City Knights. Most recently helped the York side reach the 1895 Cup final with a victory over Swinton last weekend. The half-back scored a couple of inventive tries, showing his ability. While out on loan Mikey Lewis started three of the four games in full-back which Head coach Tony Smith said, “He proved that he’s a half-back and not a full-back over that month, undoubtedly.” As one re-joins the club, another leaves on loan, full-back Will Dagger has struggled for game time this season and joins Featherstone Rovers on an initial two-week loan.
