‘Man with axe’ arrested

Police have confirmed a man was arrested this morning (Friday October 12) following reports that he had been seen holding an axe and acting in a threatening manner in Butcher Row in the town. They said the alert was raised around 9am after which officers, including dog handlers, were deployed.

In a statement to Beverley FM, police said: “The man was quickly arrested. During the course of his arrest one of our dog handlers was allegedly assaulted and sustained minor injuries. No-one else was hurt.” The statement continued: “The 47-year-old suspect has been arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and assaulting a police officer. Thank you to all members of the public who contacted us so quickly about this isolated incident.”
