LOCAL RUGBY LEAGUE: Blue & Golds announce 3 friendlies
Beverley Amateur Rugby League Club has announced three pre-season friendlies ahead of their 2018 campaign in National Conference Division 3. The first of these will be the toughest and will be against Premier Division outfit Myton Warriors. The Hull outfit will visit Beverley Leisure Centre on January 20.
The second of the friendlies will be a visit to Wakefield outfit Eastmoor Dragons, with the final match at home to West Bowling on February 17th. Beverley previously met the Bradford-based outfit three times during the 2016 campaign in the Yorkshire Premier Division. All games are scheduled to have a 2pm kick-off.
In between these friendlies, of course, will be a first-round Challenge Cup tie away at Shaw Cross on January 27th, also kicking off at 2pm.
Preparations for the 2018 season go on apace. The club has taken delivery of its temporary perimeter fencing and dug-outs. These will have to be erected before every match and then taken down. The coaching structure for 2018 has also been confirmed – Pat Howdle continues as Director of Rugby with Scott Taylor as Head Coach and Duncan O’Connor as Assistant Coach.
The ‘A’ team Head Coach will be Phil Horsfield with Phil Young being his assistant. The ‘A’ team will be entering the Yorkshire Men’s League with the fixtures and structures of the league to be announced in due course.
Meanwhile, the club was saddened to hear of the death of a former stalwart of Beverley ARLFC. Mike Nicholson was involved with both junior and senior teams at the club during the 1980’s and 1990’s, acting as a physio and assistant coach. A player at the time, Nick Robinson, commented: ”Mike would go out of his way to encourage new and young members at the club and to be involved in sport and physical activity in general. This would often mean driving several miles out of his way just so they could get to training sessions. He certainly will be missed.”
