LOCAL FOOTBALL: Town ‘Crown’ fine display by hitting five!
Beverley Town 5 – 1 Crown (Saturday February 3)
Town were in action at home again as they faced defending champions Crown on a heavy pitch at Cranswick. Both teams started reasonably well; Crown trying to play out from the back and Beverley exploiting their pace down the flanks.
It was Crown who went ahead on 22 minutes; a mistake at the back from a long ball gave Crown an opportunity, and one they took with both hands as the striker slotted home from 20 yards out.
This spurred Town into life and they increased their tempo and intent in their game. On 35 minutes Niall Ringrose equalised after a near-post flick-on found him with space and time to finish at the back post. Six minutes later Town took the lead after some good work down the right wing by Aldo Hysenaj, who drifted past his man and crossed to the back post for Karl Fitzgerald to head home from six yards out.
Half time Town 2-1 Crown
Town started the second half well and really asserted their authority on the game. With an extra man in midfield now starting to tell, the classy Stu Oliver was finding time and space to pick his passes.
Alex Stark worked tirelessly up front and got his just rewards with two well taken goals. The first, on 61 minutes, was a real poacher’s goal, fired in from five yards out after the keeper spilled from Stu Oliver’s shot. The second, a fine finish from the left-hand edge of the box, saw Stark open his body up and curl the ball post the on-rushing keeper.
Karl Fitzgerald added his second and Towns fifth goal on 85 minutes with a wonderful free-kick curled into the top corner from 24 yards out.
Manager Rich Jagger was pleased with the result: “ It wasn’t easy conditions for football but we tried to play and got our just rewards at the end of the day. Again we put in a really strong second half performance and the lads seem to be getting fitter, stronger and more confident every week. What pleases me the most is how we have reacted since losing to South Cave. A 4-1 win and a 5-1 win is exactly the reaction I was looking for and we now go into next week’s cup quarter final full of confidence “
