Local football: Beverley crash out of cup

Bridlington Town Reserves 2 – 1 Beverley Town (Whitehead’s cup)

Town travelled to Bridlington in a tough Whitehead’s Cup ie against Humber 1 leaders Bridlington Town Reserves. Once again, injuries and suspensions meant changes were made to the side, with Eric Gardham coming in for his first team debut at centre half, and Karl Fitzgerald making his debut at left back.

Town started well, with Leon Dawson causing all sorts of problems down the left hand side. However Bridlington went 1-0 up with a neat finish from the edge of the box , after some good work down their left hand side.

Brid doubled there lead 10 minutes later, with a smart free kick from 40 years out catching Town’s keeper out at the near post.

Joe Norton made it 2-1 on 35 minutes when a deep cross drifted into the top corner. Town continued to play good football and control possession , but couldn’t convert their chances.

Half time 2-1

Town took control of the game from the start of the second half, playing good passing football and creating some good opportunities. However Brid defended well, and Town couldn’t find that elusive equaliser.

Craig Muirhead did go close after a fantastic move from one side of the pitch to the other; however the cross from Leon Dawson could not quite get the finishing touch.

In the final three minutes , Karl Fitzgerald went close from a free kick and Muirhead had one last chance, but the goal stayed intact.

Town manager Rich Jagger was frustrated at full time: “Again we played well but but didn’t convert chances and conceded two poor goals. We’ve got to keep our heads up because we are playing some good stuff and I think it’s only a matter of time before things click.

“I was pleased to see Eric Gardham come in from the reserves and have a good game, and Karl Fitzgerald did well on his debut, too. Unfortunately, though, we are losing Craig Muirhead, who has signed for Barton in the Northern Counties Premier League. However Matty Littlefield is getting fitter every week and Alex Stark should be back next week, and these two have a great opportunity to lead the line over the next few weeks.”
