Honour for Cherry Burton fund-raiser
A Cherry Burton man has been honoured in this year’s East Riding of Yorkshire Council Chairmen’s Awards, which celebrate the contributions of individuals and organisations over the past year that have helped make the East Riding a better place. Tony Baker received a Community Award for what was described as “ an enormous amount of voluntary work” benefitting residents of the village.
Finalists at the ceremony, held at Bridlington Spa, were all nominated by the public and Tony told Beverley FM he was shocked to be a winner. “I’ve never won anything in my life before,” he said. Those nominating him praised his efforts as a member of the village’s sports field committee, accessing grants to plan and build a multi-purpose games area. Tony is also on the tennis club committee and spends hours checking the courts, the multi-use games area and the outside gym and carries out any maintenance needed. He has also obtained funding to refurbish courts and toilet facilities.
He has also been responsible for improvements to the local environment, planting meadow flowers as well as ensuring trees, hedges, paths, and parking areas are well maintained. He told us: “We are in the process of refurbishing the pavilion in Cherry Burton so maybe this award will go some way to help raise the profile and the money we need to complete the project.”
