Beverley History – Woolworths
Ask anyone what shop they miss the most in Beverley today and top of the list may well be Woolworths. Located on Toll Gavel, Woolworths department store was one of the largest shops in the town when it originally opened.
Situated on the site of the old Golden Ball Pub, Woolworths was famous for its low cost goods and own brand products including Winfield, Chad Valley, and Ladybird. Woolworths was the place many went to for a bargain. Children loved to take advantage of the exclusive ‘Pick n Mix’ section where they could choose their pocket money sweets.
Next to the shop and between Walkergate and Toll Gavel was Golden Ball Passage or Woolies Passage, as it became known in the town, it still survives today over 150 years later.
Following disastrous trading losses nationally, and the liquidation of the parent company, the Beverley store closed on January 2nd, 2009 and was eventually replaced by Boots the Chemist, which has been there ever since.
