Beverley History – The Shipyard

Most young people in Beverley today would be surprised to learn that from the early 1880’s through to 1977 there used to be a flourishing shipyard in the town.

Built on the banks on the River Hull at Grovehill and now an industrial estate, Beverley shipyard owners had a great reputation for building quality trawlers and minesweepers that were sold all over the world.

Those of us old enough will remember rushing down to the river edge to watch the side launching of many a trawler – making sure not to stand too close to the river or risk getting a good soaking!
