Beverley History – The Monks Walk
Situated on Highgate, the Monks Walk Inn in local folklore is said to be situated on the old route where victims of the plague were carried from the Beverley Minster to be buried in the plague pit (now the site of the Beverley railway station). A sign on the outside of one of the buildings at the back of the inn reads 1671 the date of the original construction of the George and Dragon the first Inn on the site.
The building was also the home of a clay pipe maker working in the yard until the early 1920’s. John Goforth also used the premises in the mid 1860’s to manufacture Dandy Pipes so called after Goforth’s nickname ‘Dandy’.
