Beverley History – The Cattle Market
Listeners of a certain age will remember going to Beverley Cattle Market situated on Morton Lane car park during the school holidays to watch the buying and selling of local animals.
Beverley has a rich tradition of regular markets stretching back hundreds of years, with both Saturday and Wednesday ‘produce’ markets open to the public. Beverley cattle market operated on Wednesday’s only for over 1,300 years with the main entrance from Norwood and it was not generally open to the public.
Following the closure of the cattle market and despite a spirited opposition campaign, the supermarket chain Tesco bought part of the site in the late 90’s and developed a large superstore and car park.
