BEVERLEY Puppet Festival was named Tourism Event of the Year at Hull and East Yorkshire’s very own tourism “Oscars”, held last night at Bridlington Spa. Judges for the REYTAS (the Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards) described the festival as “an unforgettable arts experience that transforms and celebrates the town of Beverley”. 2022 marked the tenth Beverley festival, now the largest festival of British puppetry and widely recognised nationally and internationally.

There was more local success, too, with Laurel Vines Vineyard and Winery, based at Aike, just outside Beverley, winning the Remarkable Ethical, Responsible & Sustainable Tourism Award; Pasture House Cottages at Brandesburton named Self-Catering Accommodation of the Year; William’s Den at North Cave as Visitor Attraction of the Year and Staal Smokehouse of Long Riston picking up the Remarkable Local Producer Award.

The full list of award winners can be viewed at the foot of this page.

92-YEAR-OLD Royal Navy veteran John Reffell, now a resident of Beverley Parklands Care Home, will be among those attending the town’s Remembrance Day Parade on Sunday and ahead of that has been volunteering to help with the Royal British Legion’s Poppy sales.

John, having joined the Royal Navy in 1945 at the age of 15, wanted to show his respects to fellow comrades by offering to help sell the poppies this week, as he knows that this support is a lifeline for thousands of serving and ex-serving personnel and their families. John (pictured left) was assisting efforts at the Aldi supermarket in Beverley at the weekend.

Sunday’s parade, under the guidance of the Defence School of Transport, assembles in the School Lane car park, behind Beverley Fire Station at 10am, before marching along New Walkergate, Railway Street, Eastgate and Minster Yard North to Beverley Minster ahead of the Service of Remembrance at 10.50am. After the service, the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding will take the salute at the Market Cross followed by a short service and laying of wreaths in Memorial Gardens.
