FR: North Ferriby 2-0 Pickering Town

A new kit, new dressing rooms and a 2-0 victory as North Ferriby beat Pickering Town 2-0 in their first home friendly of the season. Despite missing seven members of the squad the Villagers had too much for their Northern Premier League Division One East opponents. Manager Chris Bolder was happy with the performance in getting the win but it’s not about the result at this early stage of the build-up to the new season. There are certain things manager’s look for during pre-season and it also gives players an opportunity to show what they can do.

“Like we said last season and the season before you have certain objectives you want to achieve in pre-season with minutes in the legs, formations, patterns of play in and out of possession, all that kind of stuff,” said Bolder.
“Yes, there is the result, everyone cares about the result but it isn’t the be-all and end-all but we are pleased to have got the victory today. It was a good football game, well balanced and I think both sides dictated the game for periods. I think we were the more threatening with chances created and their keeper made some wonderful saves to keep them in the game.”

There has also been opportunities for some trialists and other players to step up as Bolder added: “The trialists we have with us have been with us all pre-season and it helps with competition for places especially with us having seven missing today. It is important you have enough players to see you through pre-season.
“Also when you are presented with situations like this it gives minutes to other players who maybe wouldn’t get those minutes when other players are available. I thought the trialists were brilliant as they have been all pre-season and we will continue to look at them throughout and see where we go.”

The opening chance of the game fell to the visitors through a dangerous cross and it had to be cleared by Levi Tarbotton but who sliced the ball over the bar in getting rid of it. However, it didn’t take long for the Villagers to open their account and it came from Danny Buttle. Great work by Danny Emerton saw Tom Corner through on goal but his shot was well saved by the Pickering Trialist keeper. The ball bounced up kindly for the winger who was eight yards out from goal and his bullet header hit the back of the net for the first Ferriby goal of the pre-season.
There was nearly a second Corner/Buttle combination when Corner found himself out on the right and created a chance for his winger but a well-timed tackled on Buttle stopped the move. Ferriby let up the pressure with another chance against the Pikes as Joe McFadyen went close with a shot. The chances continued to come Ferriby’s way with Emerton twice going close, his first cleared off the line and then from a corner but the Villagers had to settle for just a one-goal lead at the break. It was then the usual pre-season substitutions with both goal scorers coming off.

It was certainly a good day for trialists on both sides as Ferriby had another chance when Corner headed a cross from a Ferriby trialist for it to be well saved by the Town keeper. Ferriby had a goal disallowed from another trialist before Pickering had one turned down for offside.
Ferriby continued to press and created three more great chances firstly with Corner denied from great work by Emerton as one of the three trialists also saw his shot saved. Tarbotton then popped up at the far post but he also couldn’t make the net ripple. Finally, the second goal came when a brilliant shot from Joe McFadyen powered past the Town keeper to put further daylight between the two sides. This completed a great performance from the Villagers as they continue their pre-season programme ahead of a long season.
