Food festival ‘best in Yorkshire’
Beverley Food Festival has triumphed in the regional finals of this year’s Countryside Alliance Rural Oscars, winning the title of best in Yorkshire in the awards’ local food and drink category. It now goes forward to the national finals to be held at the houses of Parliament on June 19th.
In making their award the judges said they were very impressed by the festival, describing it as almost one of a kind.
They said: “The focus is exclusively on producers of food, and localism and is run on a not-for-profit basis and this makes them one of a kind, as practically all other UK festivals are now run by outside companies, who do not have the local links that are apparent here.”
The judges continued: “The festival team also has provided local allotments and special educational needs plots, runs a smaller Christmas Food Festival, held in the Minster and other events, such as the annual pancake race.”
Organised by Beverley Town Council, town clerk Helen Watson is hoping to go one better than two years ago when the council received a highly commended award in the national finals ion the rural oscars’ tourism category. She told Beverley FM: ”It’s a great achievement. It’s all about localness and the passion and pride of the town.”
